The Reform Party has issued a statement calling for its supporters to help the SDP.

Signed off by party chairman Andy Zhu, the RP called on supporters to volunteer on the SDP campaign, as the party mounts a challenge for Bukit Batok SMC.

The RP also urged other opposition parties in Singapore to support Dr Chee’s bid for parliament.

“The Reform Party was created and set up by J B Jeyaretnam who brought an historic win for the Opposition in the Anson by-election in 1981. That win was brought about in part by an unusual degree of cooperation from the other Opposition parties. Barisan Socialis and the Singapore United Front even sent in their workers to help Mr Jeyaretnam in the battle for Anson. The Reform Party has made this decision in the Anson spirit and we hope that other parties will follow suit.”

The SDP has expressed its gratitude for the RP’s rallying cry:

“To our comrades and colleagues in the Reform Party, led by Kenneth Jeyaretnam. The SDP owes you an immeasurable debt of gratitude for this unprecedented show of support and solidarity. The fight to be true to our national pledge of building a “Democratic Society based on Justice and Equality”, is often arduous and lonely. We are indeed grateful for all the encouragement and help that we have received so far from fellow opposition members.”

This is the Reform Party’s statement in full:

“In solidarity, The Reform Party has decided that all members, including office holders of the Central Executive Committee, should be free to follow their conscience in volunteering to help the SDP during the Bukit Batok by-election campaign. Reform Party’s leadership actively encourages its membership to volunteer on the SDP campaign during this period should Dr Chee’s team see fit to use them.

This decision was imparted to the membership yesterday the 28 April 2016. We hope that as many members as possible will lend their support.
