Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob has announced her intention to contest in Presidential Election 2017.

She said she is “thinking about it” when pressed by the press during a community event in Marsiling, but stopped short of revealing whether she had collected the nomination forms.

The 62-year-old, who is also MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee said that she would have to consult her family and colleagues further before deciding whether she should run for president.

To contest in PE2017, she will have to step down as Speaker of Parliament and MP of Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC by Nomination Day, and also resign from the People’s Action Party.

Besides that, Mdm Halimah’s husband will also have to assume duties as the spouse of a president if she runs and wins.

Mdm Halimah said that her husband has taken part in “a lot of activities” in her constituency and is known to grassroots leaders and residents

So far, two other potential candidates have stepped forward to contest in this “reserved for Malay candidates” only election.

They are chairman of Bourbon Offshore Asia Pacific Farid Khan Kaim Khan, and Second Chance Properties CEO Mohamed Salleh Marican.

Oh yeah, and then there’s this Shirwin Eu bugger.
