SDP Gives Away Sembawang GRC to the NSP: “Compromise is Key”

The Singapore Democratic Party has relinquished its General Election fight in Sembawang GRC.

This comes at the end of tonight’s opposition solidarity talks, aimed at preventing multi-cornered fights with the PAP in constituencies.

SDP chief Dr Chee Soon Juan has apologised to Sembawang residents.

He said that giving up Sembawang GRC was a “difficult decision to make”, but it was taken as a means to “facilitate the discussions among parties and, hopefully, assist in their resolutions.”

The SDP will now focus on its challenge for Bukit Batok and Bukit Panjang SMCs, and Holland-Bukit Timah and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRCs.

The NSP is faced with two 3-cornered fights, both with the Workers’ Party, in MacPherson SMC and Marine Parade GRC, which had been amongst the main sticking point of discussions.

The party will also be contesting in Pioneer SMC, and Sembwang and Tampines GRCs.
