National Development Minister Lawrence Wong and Senior Minister of State for Communication, Information and Education Janil Puthucheary have been appointed as advisers to the National Trades Union Congress.

They will be advisers to a group of labour association leaders called the U Associate Leaders’ Circle (UALC), which was set up in 2015 and comprises leaders from various labour associations in the NTUC U Associate ecosystem.

These are the latest appointments in the move to put more PAP members in the labour union.

State news agency The Straits Times reported that in November last year, NTUC announced that more PAP ministers and backbenchers will be taking on more roles in NTUC unions and associations in a bid to strengthen partnership with the ruling party.

PAP MP and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing currently serves as NTUC’s secretary-General.

Launched in 2011, UALC boasts 67 associations in its network and represents more than 250,000 members from different professions.

The association, which is chaired by a senior leader from the labour movement, discusses issues affecting the various industries and allows for collaboration.
