WANXIN PEDANTIC HUANG: My friend, Nisha Kumar, will die if she does not receive a bone marrow transplant.
Nisha was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia a few weeks ago, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. She is one of the kindest, most compassionate pple I know. She has this infectious energy and zest for life, and everything she has ever done has been about helping others — professionally, she has been a social worker helping underprivileged families and youth at risk; outside of work, she volunteered in Africa helping orphanages with AIDS and shaved her head for Hair For Hope. It really sucks that this kind of shit happens to someone good.
Nisha needs a bone marrow transplant. And because of the way bone marrow is created, there is a higher chance of a successful match from donors from the same racial group. According to stats from the Bone Marrow Donor Programme, she only has a 4% chance of finding a local donor because there are so few Indian donors on the bone marrow registry. 4 freaking percent. Her own brother was only a 50% match.
If you are of Indian or Malayee descent and between 17-49 years old, please consider becoming a bone marrow donor via the BMDP (https://bmdp.org/be-a-donor/). If you are not Indian, please consider sharing this with your network and Indian friends.
