If not for an alert auxiliary policeman, a playground filled with children and old folks could have been crushed to death by the actions of a drunk driver.

Fortunately, the officer and a colleague were on patrol at the time of the near-death incident.

On Friday night (19Dec), they spooted a black sedan car travelling on the pavement and heading straight for the playground.

Frantically, the driver stood in harm’s way, waving his torchlight to catch the driver’s attention.

It worked. The driver jammed on the brakes, stopping his car before it hit anybody.

The force of the brakes left visible tracks on the grass patch where the car had stopped.

Traffic police officers were called to the scene, and they arrested the driver after he failed a breathalyser test.
