China Tourist Drowns during Drunken Swim, Mom Demands Compensation from Hotel

The mother of China tourist is demanding compensation from Novotel Singapore following her daughter’s drowning in the hotel’s swimming pool.

Police investigations show that 23-year-old Fan Xiao Jing had been playing around with 4 of her friends near the hotel swimming pool, and was in a drunk when she dived into the pool.

The incident took place on 6 May last year.

However, the young lady’s mother, 46-year-old Cheng Lan, is demanding “justice” for her daughter.

She said that Fan came to Singapore for a holiday on 4 May last year, during which she visited palces of interest such as the Universal Studios theme park and Orchard Road.

On the day of her death, she had been walking around the Little India area when she made a last-minute decision to eat bak kut for lunch with 4 men she had just met – Singaporeans, and a Taiwanese fitness instructor.

Mdm Cheng said that her daughter went for drinks at a pub with her new friends that night, and thereafter they went to Novotel and fooled around by the poolside before she took that fatal dive.

Mdm Cheng said that her daughter would still be alive if not for that last-minute decision to eat bak kut teh.

On Monday (8 Jan), she made her 5th trip to Singapore to seek justice for her daughter.

She said that she has hired a lawyer and is demanding compensation from Novotel.

Mdm Cheng said that her daughter did not buy travel insurance or life insurance because in her hometown, buying insurance is considered “suay”.

She says that she intends to stay the course until justice is served.
