Sengkang Lift Plunges 3 Floors Down then Shoots Upwards Again, Injuring Taxi Uncle

“This lift always gives problems. The doors always cannot close properly. Maintenance was done just 2 weeks ago and it was still working fine on Sunday (14 Jan). Who knows the lift problem suddenly worsened instead.”

So said a 63-year-old taxi uncle who was injured twice in the span of 2 days after taking a Lift B at Block 122 Sengkang East Way.

Uncle Tan first injured himself on Monday (15 Jan) at about 5pm.

He was about to walk out of the lift when he tripped and fell.

He said that upon checking, the lift floor was not level with the ground and there was a 15cm gap.

“Luckily I grabbed the handle in the lift in time, that’s why I wasn’t too seriously injured.”

Fate dictated that Uncle Tan would be suay a second time.

On Tuesday (16 Jan), he took the lift at the 7th floor when it suddenly plunged, came to a stop, then shot upwards again.

“In about 1 second, the lift suddenly sped down from the 7th floor to somewhere in between the 4th and 5th floor. I totally didn’t expect this and that’s why I lost my balance and fell. Before I had time to stand up properly and steady myself, the lift suddenly shot up twice and I fell again. After a while, the lift started working normally again.”

Uncle Tan said that after the incident, he felt a sharp pain in his buttocks and swelling in his right ankle so he returned home to rest.

He is frustrated that the lift is malfunctioning again despite being fixed 2 weeks ago, and this time the problems are more serious.
