Last Wednesday (11 Nov), Vietnamese brides were being put up for sale at S$2500 a lady on popular Chinese online shopping portal, Taobao.
The post, which used a featured picture of Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, read “Vietnam bride wife double-11 shopping spree” and claimed to have 98 “items” in stock.
“Bring a beautiful wife home for 9998 yuan (about S$2500),” the post description read.
The “items” were supposedly ready to be shipped from Yunan province in China to any part of the world.
The seller, Wang Xiao Xi’s Gift Shop, has sold 2568 items over the past month, with the most popular items being socks.
By evening, the post had been taken down.
Many Singaporeans like shopping on Taobao for consumer and lifestyle goods, which can be found at cheap prices.
The “Vietnamese bride” sale was part of the Single’s Day shopping spree organised by Alibaba, which owns Taobao.
According to the seller’s profile on Taobao, The post selling Vietnamese brides was no longer available by 4.30pm.
