51-year-old taxi uncle Mr Lee has been a taxi driver for the past 18 years without incidence.

Then, sh*t hit the fan last Friday (7 Apr).

At about 8pm, he was sending a male passenger home to Hougang.

When he reached Hougang Avenue 3, Mr Lee said he noticed there was smoke coming from the exhaust of his SMRT taxi.

Moments later, smoke rose from the bonnet.

“I immediately stopped the taxi, took out my handphone, passport and money and got out with the passenger. As soon as we got out, the engine caught fire.”

Heng ah, otherwise both men could have been fried.

A resident, Mr Teo, said he got a shock when he heard a loud explosion.

Looking out the window, he saw the taxi burning.

Mr Teo said he heard several “explosion” sounds as the taxi burned.

Taxi Uncle Mr Lee said he had just sent his taxi for servicing 5 weeks ago and was about to send it for another round of servicing before the big blaze.

SCDF officers arrived shortly after the explosion and put out the fire.

The taxi was badly burnt, with the engine area suffering the greatest damage.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
