The role of the trusty sub-editor, working to lay out pages beautifully for the pleasure of readers, has been outsourced by TODAY to Australian firm, Pagemasters.

Pagemasters is expected to work out of its Vietnam office to sub-edit content for TODAY – all content except local news, which will still be handled by Today sub-editors.

This is the first time that Singapore’s second most widely circulated broadsheet will be sub-edited overseas.

MediaCorp has maintained that it isn’t cutting jobs from its inhouse sub-editing team.

The August move comes after MediaCorp laid off a number of staff earlier last year what was deemed a company-wide restructuring.

Pagemasters is known in Australia’s media circles as the media firm that handles sub-editing functions for two of Australia’s largest newspaper companies – Fairfax and News Corp.

Journalists unions in Australia protested the move, saying it would lead to a dip in quality.
