A text message helped a woman nab a pervert who was filming her changing in a Cotton On changing room.

The 21-year-old student had just removed her top and bra to try on some clothes when she heard the text message alert.

She bent down to retrieve her phone from her bag when to her horror she saw a man in the neighbouring changing room filming her with his handphone.

The student managed to stop the pervert as he tried to leave the changing room, and informed Cotton On staff about what happened.

That pervert happens to be 26-year-old Darren Tan Yong Xin, who is currently a full-time NSman.

On 30 April last year, he had gone to the Cotton On store at Vivocity and at about 3.30pm filmed a woman in the changing room next to his.

He did this by placing his handphone near the gap between the changing room divider.

Tan didn’t get caught and that emboldened him to pull the same trick on the next woman who entered – the 21-year-old student who eventually brought him to justice.

When police checked Tan’s phone, they found a video capturing the woman changing along with a number of other obscene videos.

Tan admitted that he downloaded the videos from the Internet.

He was convicted today of one count of insulting the modesty of a woman one count of attempting to do so and one count of possessing four obscene films.

Another 5 similar counts will be taken into consideration during sentencing.

This changing room caper wasn’t Tan’s first time trying film women in compromising positions.

In 2014, he tried to take an upskirt photo of a 32-year-old banker at Yio Chu Kang MRT station by standing behind her on an up-riding escalator and positioning his handphone between her thighs.

The woman sensed something amiss, turned around and caught Tan in the act but he fled the station before police arrived.

Police later established his identity and arrested him.
