Big Brother is Watching: 62,000 Police Cameras Installed in HDB Areas, 11,000 More Planned

Police have completed the installation of over 62,000 cameras in HDB blocks and multi-storey carparks as part of the PolCam 1.0 initiative.

Moving on to Polcam 2.0, 11,000 more cameras will be progressively installed in public areas like town centres, neighbourhood centres, hawker centres and linkways that lead to transport nodes such as MRT stations and bus interchanges.

The first cameras under PolCam 2.0 were put up at Ang Mo Kio Town Centre, Bedok Town Centre and Jurong Gateway last month.

The police cameras feature pan-tilt-zoom functions and 360-degree fields of view.

They will be able to automatically analyse closed-circuit television footage to detect unusual activities.

Police say the installation of cameras have proven useful in helping to deter and solve crimes.

“As of May 2016, 2,300 video footage from the cameras provided useful leads which helped the police solve more than 1,100 cases.”
