Hawkers at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre have complained that cleaning fees have risen by up to 50 percent after NTUC Foodfare took over management of the hawker centre from the National Environment Agency in July last year.
For stalls selling drinks and juices, the monthly cleaning charge went up to S$513.60 from S$350. For pastries and kueh stalls, it rose to S$374.50 from S$250. For cooked food stalls, it increased to S$588.50 from a range of S$420 to S$450.
According to NTUC, it had to bring in a new contractor after the previous one went “missing” in June last year.
An open tender was then called last September to appoint a new contractor for 2018, and it was the centre’s Hawker’s Association that decided on the winning bid.
NTUC also claims that only 2 hawkers have to abide by the regulation which states that hawkers must operate for a minimum of 6 days a week and for 8 hours a day.
NTUC said that other hawkers who have been there before can decide on their own operating hours and days of stall closure as long as Foodfare is kept informed.
