Ho Ching Calls for Licensing and Insurance Requirements for Bicycles

Temasek Holdings CEO Ho Ching says that bicycles should be licensed just like cars and buses.

That would include registration and 3rd party insurance.

Ho, the wife of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said:

“Register all bicycles and PMDs like we register cars and buses.
All registered bicycles and PMDs should come with 3rd party insurance.
License riders as well separately, like the way we license drivers of trucks and vans. Establish different classes of bicycles and PMDs, off road and on road, pathway and highway, battery powered and non battery powered.
We used to license bicycles. About time we do that again, as we transit to various transport modes.”

This comes amidst a rising spate of “cyclists behaving badly” complaints by motorists.

Cyclists, however, argue that drivers are unnecessarily inconsiderate and aggressive.

Between January and November 2019, there were 417 traffic accidents involving cyclists and e-bike users.
