Job Openings in Singapore in 3rd Year of Decline, Tumble 20 Percent from 2014 High

The number of job openings in Singapore took a tumble for the 3rd year in a row.

The Manpower Ministry reported that the number of job openings as of Sept 2017 was 53,100, down from the high of 67,400 in 2014.

The latest job opening numbers as of Sept 2017 resemble that of post-2008 financial crisis figures.

For PMETs, software, Web and multimedia developers (1,290); teaching and training professionals (1,140); commercial and marketing sales executives (870); and management executives (830) were the occupations with the most available openings.

But, employers cited the lack of necessary work experience as the top challenge in hiring locals.

For non-PMETs, the roles with the most vacancies were security guards (1,540); receptionists, customer service and information clerks (1,430); and shop sales assistants (1,370).

But the Manpower Ministry reported that unattractive pay, having to work on weekends and public holidays, and having to do shift work were among the main reasons people were not attracted to non-PMET jobs that could not be filled for 6 months or more.
