Former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and ex-MP Cheng Li Hui had been in an “inappropriate relationship”.
They refused to stop even after they were told to.
This was revealed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today (17Jul).
Both Tan and Cheng resigned today from their positions in parliament and the PAP.
PM Lee said he was first alerted to the “”inappropriate relationship” between Tan and Cheng after the last general election in 2020.
He said that they were spoken to and counselled, but things did not stop.
PM Lee said that he had spoken to Tan about this relationship most recently in February this year.
Tan admitted his mistake and offered his resignation at the time.
PM Lee said he accepted it, but needed time to make arrangements for residents in Tan’s Kembangan-Chai Chee ward in Marine Parade GRC.
PM Lee added that he also spoke to Cheng in February.
However, he said that he had “very recently” discovered that Tan and Cheng were still going at it.
In seperate letters accepting their resignations, PM Lee wrote:
“Your resignation is necessary, to maintain the high standards of propriety and personal conduct which the PAP has upheld all these years.”
Tan, 54, is married with 2 children.
Cheng is unmarried and does not have any kids.
