PE2023: A Song Written by Visually-Impaired Busker Daniel for Tan Kin Lian

Singaporeans can finally heave a sigh of relief that there is at least 1 independent candidate for the 2023 Presidential Election, now that former NTUC Income chief Tan Kin Lian has been officially pronounced a candidate.

A flashback here to a song by popular visually-impaired busker Daniel from 2011.

Daniel spun the lyrics of this song to an old “Blowin in the Wind” tune by Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan

In the song, he asks:

  • MRT and bus fares are going up when oil prices have already come down?
  • HDB prices flats are going up, some say it’s because of speculation?
  • Education fees are going up, how can we ever get a good degree?
  • Food prices are going up, how can they say it’s inflation?
  • How many years can a man keep on working, before he can retire?

Daniel ends the song by endorsing Tan for the presidency.

Interestingly, this song was performed for Tan during the 2011 Presidential Election.

12 years on, it appears that questions Daniel has asked are even more relevant, and the issues felt more painfully by Singaporeans.

Tan has said he is running for the presidency to serve as a bridge between Singaporeans and a government that is out of touch with the common people.

He says that he wants to advise government leaders and work with them to find better solutions to cost of living issues, expensive housing, and job security of Singaporeans.
