The first Prime Minister of Singapore to raise GST two times during his tenure?
Nope, it’s not Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, but his predecessor, Goh Chok Tong.
As if some sick joke to strike the wallets of Singaporeans, GST was first implemented on 1 April 1994.
By that time, Goh Chok Tong had already taken over the PM reins from Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew.
Lee Kuan Yew: 1959 to 1990
Goh Chok Tong: 1990 to 2004
Lee Hsien Loong: 2004 – present
Goh then went on to increase GST twice during his term as PM – once in 2003, and another time in 2004.
Only 3 years after taking over the hot seat from Goh did current prime minister Lee Hsien Loong raise GST – in 2007.
However, he has already matched the two percentage points increase in GST implemented by Goh (from 3% to 5%).
If PM Lee does stay on till the next GST increase, which is expected sometime between 2022 and 2025, he will make history too.
That is, as the “highest raiser” of GST (from 5% to 9%).
