Across the Causeway

Malaysian PM Ah Jib Shows His is Bigger than Mahathir’s By Splurging S$1.7 Billion on New Tower

It looks like size matters in the war across the Causeway between current Prime Minister Najib Razak and his former PM nemesis Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

And it’s measured in metres rather than inches.

Mr Najib is set to splurge S$1.7 billion to build a 118-storey tower just 4km away from the renowned 88-storey twin Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur which was built by Dr Mahathir.

Built by state equity fund Permodalan Nasional Berhad, the new tower, PNB118, is expected to be completed in 202o.

When that’s done, it’ll be the tallest tower in Southeast Asia.

And, it’s likely you can see Bukit Batok (helmed either by Murali or Dr Chee) from the top floor.

The launch of this project comes at a time when Dr Mahathir is making a strong push to topple Mr Najib by blaming the him for the financial scandal tied to state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

But Mr Najib has denied that the tower-tournament is about political rivalry, or that he’s trying to dismantle Dr Mahathir’s legacy.
