SDP’s New GE Candidates: A Double Masters Ma’am and Former Navy Specialist

The Singapore Democrats have unveiled Ms Choong Wai Fung and Mr Gerous Khung Wai Yeen as their new candidates for the upcoming General Election.

Ms Chong is currently the SDP’s treasurer.

The 45-year-old is also an administrator at Ren Ci Hospital’s Nursing Home in Moulmein.

She joined the SDP in 2011 and has been working the ground to touch base with low income families.

Said SDP Sec-Gen Dr Chee Soon Juan:

“Her leadership qualities have propelled her to the fore of SDP. Wai Fung would make a tremendous impact as an MP and as a caring member for her constituents.”

Ms Chong holds two Masters degrees – one in public health and another in clinical epidemiology.

Explaining why she got into politics, Ms Chong said:

“I have always had a passion for vulnerable people – the old, children – I’ve got a passion for caring for the older people. I’m a nurse by profession, so I’ve seen healthcare policies affect people. Whether it’s a healthcare financing policy or it’s hospital issue, VWOs (volunteer welfare organisations) try to fill up the gaps when people fall through the cracks. Don’t get me wrong, VWOs are doing a very good job. I worked for a VWO, but I believe I can make a bigger impact by being a voice in Parliament.”

Mr Khung is an accounts manager at a European multinational company.

The 34-year-old was formerly a Chief Engineering Naval Specialist in the Republic of Singapore Navy.

He has been with the SDP for more than 4 years now, and says that the party is eager to improve Singaporeans’ lives.

“I believe that with the SDP in parliament, we’ll be pushing for alternative policies to make life better for Singaporeans.”

The pair will either be fielded in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, or Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, or as single contestants in Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang and Yuhua SMCs.
