Cyclist Awarded S$8.65 Mil Compensation for Injuries and Trauma Suffered in Accident

The High Court has awarded 42-year-old Siew Pick Chiang S$8.65 million in damages after she sued Hyundai Engineering & Construction for negligence.

Siew was cycling  on the pavement along Pasir Ris Drive 8 in October 2009 when she was hit by construction cables coming from a nearby worksite.

The court found Hyundai 100 percent liable for the accident, which left her warded for more than 2 years at a stretch, and still remains warded.

Siew suffered minor injuries from the accident, but claimed that accident was so serious she suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Siew had initially sought $26 million in special and general damages, which included medical and hospital expenses.

The $8.645 million which she was eventually awarded includes sums for loss of future earnings, present and future medical costs as well non-medical expenses.
