A netizen has posted a notice from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, informing the netizen’s mother that she has been fined S$150 in late fees for failing to file her income tax.

The netizen says that his mother’s income is “below S$20,000”, and is therefore not taxable.

Also, mommy isn’t proficient in English.

The IRAS supposedly did not send an IR8A form to remind mom to file her income tax.

According to IRAS, you must file your income tax if “you receive a letter, form or an SMS from IRAS informing you to do so. It does not matter how much you earned in the previous year.”

You don’t have to file your income tax if “you receive a letter or an SMS informing you that you have been selected for Notification of Selection for No-Filing Services”.

No tax is payable for those earning S$20,000 and below a year.
