58-year-old Homeless Uncle Mr Cheng is believed to be homeless and that’s why he has been sleeping at the void deck of Block 221 Boon Lay Place.

He had run a chicken rice stall for 20 years, but quit 10 years ago after he contracted diabetes and kidney failure.

For the past 6 years, Homeless Uncle has been selling tissue paper packets at Woodlands MRT station after falling on hard times.

He divorced his wife and sold his house, and has been frequenting various void decks in the Woodlands and Boon Lay regions to rest for the night.

Yesterday, he didn’t wake up from his slumber.

Homeless Uncle’s brother described him as an independent person who never bothered anyone with his problems or asked for any favours, and was well-liked by those who knew him.

“At the end he had little but was always ready to share what he had with those around him. Those who knew him loved him very much.”
