The Workers’ Party has come under the spotlight for giving out 275 expired “fresh” chickens to needy families ahead of Hari Raya celebrations this year.
The chicken, which was part of foodstuff donation drive, had expired for a month.
Residents staying in Marine Parade, Fengshan, Kaki Bukit and Bedok South received the expired chicken.
WP secretary-general Pritam Singh said that the expiry date of the chicken was “overlooked”.
He said that he made query into the “the oversight from the WP volunteers and coordinators in charge” and discovered that about 20 people were affected.
Speaking to alternative news agency The Online Citizen, Mr Singh said that he was informed that “some private donors” from Waterview Condominium had sponsored a food distribution as “part of a charity drive for low-income residents in WP wards” and areas where the party had previously contested.
Mr Singh, who is also Chairman of Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, said that upon noticing the cock up WP members alerted residents between 2-3 Jun and told them to dispose of the chicken.
A new batch of fresh chicken was delivered to the affected recipients by the organisers of the charity event on 9 Jun.
Mr Singh has acknowledged that WP volunteers should have been more careful in checking the expiry date of the chicken before distributing them to residents.
