Two dogs fight barbarically in cages.
Hundreds of spectator crowd around the ring, cheering them on.
The prize? A pack of cigarettes and a mug for the owner of the winning dog.
Shocking scenes like these have spurred animal activists in China to cry animal abuse.
The vicious dogfights you see in these pictures, which lasted over several days, were organised by six villagers in Sanjiao village in Jishan county in northern China’s Shanxi province.
They were held to mark the end of Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival in China.
Locals, and the organisers say the dog fights are necessary as entertainment as the village is in a poor, rural area.
Police have said the event did not breach any laws and that there have been no official complaints.
China has no animal cruelty laws, and a person who damages a dog or another animal can only be prosecuted for damaging property if the animal belongs to somebody.
Dogfighting is illegal, but only if it involves bets.
Simply allowing the animals to fight purely for entertainment comes into a grey area where it is difficult to prosecute anyone involved.

This is so wrong. Why do people need to witness violence of any kind? These animals are God’s creations too. We can learn so much from them in that they don’t fight among themselves or with others for ‘entertainment’. They are more humane than we are.
This type of behavior leads to crimes against mankind. Please stop this insanity.

These people kill children and eat dogs and cats so this is nothing to them they are animals themselves China needs to move forward and need entertainment how about they fight instead of using animals cowards

It’ needs to be ban as it is cruelty to animals to fight. Its torture and abuse. Why don’t you people get on the ring and fight instead of this helpless dogs that can’t speak for themselves. Chinese are more animals than animals themselves. Makes your country look so disgusting and I will never go to china if I can help it.

This is so disgusting, how can people do this to animals and worse thing is how can people watch this go on, they should be so ashamed of them self, and ihope that something bad happens to every single person that is there, dog fighting has been band 180 years and it still goes on all over the world and it breaks my heart

I don’t care how poor you are. Money, conditions of living should give no rights to be abusive in any way. Just because I don’t have a high income should not make it ok for me to entertain child, animal or any kind of pain on a living being. This rationalization is ubsurd!
